Learning & pronunciation

Where should I begin?

Choose one contrast, such as ship/sheep. Listen, check the vowel symbols, then say each word in a short sentence. Use the phonetic chart to understand the movement and a four-question quiz round to check recognition. Five focused minutes are easier to repeat than a long list of unrelated words.

Is IPA the same as English spelling?

No. IPA symbols represent sounds. English spelling can use several letters for one sound, or one letter for different sounds. Broad transcriptions in slashes are reference forms; they do not record every detail of an individual speaker. The stress mark ˈ belongs before the stressed syllable.

Should I remove my accent?

Clarity is a more useful goal than erasing your identity. Work on sound contrasts, word stress and phrase grouping that help your listener understand. Choose one practice model while learning to recognize other accents. British and American English both contain substantial regional variation.

Can pinyin or Spanish spelling replace IPA?

They can remind you of a starting point, but they are not equivalent systems. Mandarin syllables may encourage an extra vowel after an English final consonant. Spanish has fewer vowel contrasts than many English varieties. Use the tongue, lip and airflow instructions, and respect regional Spanish patterns such as seseo and distinción.

Voices & audio

Where does the audio come from?

Words and sentences use the voice you select from your browser or operating system. The controls show its actual name, accent and whether it is local or requires internet. It is synthesized speech, not a recording of a native teacher. Available voices differ by device.

What if the selected accent has no voice?

Choose another available voice or explicitly enable the self-hosted eSpeak NG basic voice when it is offered. The site does not silently change your accent or download that engine in advance. Basic synthesis is less natural; the text, IPA and diagrams remain available without audio.

Does listening send my text to a server?

Local voices run on your device. A voice labeled online may send the text to the browser voice provider when you press play. PronounceKit has no speech backend and does not record your microphone. The Privacy page explains dictionary downloads, speech services and hosting analytics.

Quizzes & your notebook

What does my quiz score measure?

It measures answers to recognition and knowledge questions. It does not assess your own speech, certify a language level or diagnose a speech condition. Each topic has three rounds of four questions. Review missed answers, then try those words in your own sentences.

Do I have to use a timer?

No. Practice is untimed by default. You can enable a 30-second challenge before starting a round. Listening questions only start counting after audio finishes. The clock pauses when the page is hidden. You can always read explanations at your own pace.

Where are my saved words and scores stored?

They are stored in local storage for this website in this browser, shared across its three interface languages. There is no account or cloud backup. Clearing site data, switching browser profiles or leaving private browsing may remove them. Export your notebook as a JSON file for a backup or import it on another device.

How do I save a useful word or sentence?

Use Save for practice beside the pronunciation input or after a quiz answer. In My words & sentences you can add an entry, choose its type, write a note, listen, search, delete or export it. Only explicit saves add text to the notebook; typing in the pronunciation tool does not automatically save it.

About these learning materials

Are the diagrams anatomically accurate?

The diagrams and 3D views are simplified teaching aids. They highlight a movement or contrast and are not medically or physiologically validated simulations. Text explanations remain available when JavaScript or 3D is unavailable.

How can I report an error or request a guide?

Use the Contact page and include the page URL, word, intended accent and what you noticed. A dictionary reference helps us investigate. Do not send private recordings or sensitive personal information. Our About page explains the teaching approach and review limitations.
